RATINGS

93Vinous / IWC

...very intense, detailed bouquet with pure blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone and dried violet aromas... The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, grippy and dense and yet not overpowering. The oak is very well assimilated...

92James Suckling

...one of the most immediately appealing...very ripe black fruits, and there’s still a lot of structure behind it...

91Wine Spectator

Shows good tension, featuring a singed iron note running from start to finish, wrapped in dark plum and red currant fruit, with savory and tobacco accents.

90The Wine Advocate

...delightful, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, cedar and pencil box... The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry, good weight in the mouth and that Pauillac-like graphite tincture on the finish extant...

17Jancis Robinson

... Really exciting lift and stoniness on the nose. Opulent and round... Almost syrupy texture!

REGION

France, Bordeaux, St.-Estephe

Saint-Estèphe is in the northern Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River. Although it has no First Growth estates, its five Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Growth châteaux are notable, and, in recent decades, have become favorites with reviewers and consumers. Some reviewers also note that the appellation is today making excellent Cru Bourgeois wines, which frequently offer good value. There are 3,404 acres of vineyards and a variety of soil types, from gravelly soil to soil with significant sand or clay. The two Second Growth Châteaux in St.-Estephe are Cos d’Estournel and Montrose. The Third Growth Calon-Ségur is widely admired. The principal grapes grown are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
