RATINGS

95James Suckling

This is much more tannin-driven than in the past with firmness and length. Blackberries with some iron undertones. Subtle aftertaste with pretty intensity.

93Jeb Dunnuck

Lots of cured meats, dried red and black fruits, and spice notes emerge... Medium-bodied and balanced, with silky tannins, it’s a complex, layered Mourvèdre...

92The Wine Advocate

...beguiling perfume of cracked black pepper, cinnamon stick, cloves and potpourri with a core of kirsch and black raspberries plus a waft of garrigue. Full-bodied with a plush texture and tons of spiced red and black fruits, it finishes long and peppery.

92Wine Spectator

A burst of luscious raspberry and pepper flavors opens to elegantly structured smoky anise, dried cherry and licorice notes that build tension toward polished tannins.

91Vinous / IWC

...loaded with kirsch, leather, sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, licorice and dried herbs. Feral and wild, the 2017 is a heady, ripe wine...

REGION

United States, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado

Sierra Foothills AVA is in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and it includes parts of eight counties. With total acreage of 2.6 million acres, and nearly 6,000 vineyard acres, it is one of the largest appellations in California. Wine grapes were planted in the foothills during the Gold Rush in the mid-19th century and the appellation was officially recognized in 1987. There are five sub-appellations within the Sierra Foothills region, and more than 100 wineries, most small and family-owned. Zinfandel is the most successful wine grape in this region, though Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are also planted.
