RATINGS

97Wine Enthusiast

...this is a grippy, earthy wine, vibrant in blue fruit, plum and sage. Round, lush and opulent on the palate, it glides seamlessly across supple, integrated tannin and oak...

93Jeb Dunnuck

...classic notes of blackcurrants, tobacco, damp earth, chocolate, and hints of new leather. Beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, ripe, and textured, it's a smoking good, affordable effort well worth seeking out.

92James Suckling

A rich, juicy red with lots of blackberry, blueberry and tar character. Medium to full body, velvety tannins and a delicious finish. Some graphite at the end.

90Vinous / IWC

...is a rich, boisterous wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Black cherry, dark red plum, chocolate, new leather, spice and espresso give the 2017 its flamboyant, heady personality.

But by the late 1950s and early 1960s Robert Mondavi and other visionaries were producing quality wines easily distinguishable from the mass-produced jug wines made in California’s Central Valley. Napa Valley’s AVA was established in 1983, and today there are 16 sub-appellations within the Napa Valley AVA. Many grapes grow well in Napa’s Mediterranean climate, but the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay is also very successfully cultivated, and about 30% of the AVA’s acreage is planted to white grapes, with the majority of those grapes being Chardonnay,
