RATINGS

96Wine Enthusiast

Notes of ripe, red cherry on the nose of this wine are displayed with fresh-faced purity. The palate adds supple richness, offering dense, supple tannin that serves as a concentrated backdrop for the lovely fruit.

94Wine Spectator

Aromas and flavors of black currant, black cherry, violet and spice are backed by a solid spine of tannins in this supple, yet muscular red. The tannins are assertive now, leaving a dusting of chalk and cocoa on the finish.

94James Suckling

This is chewy and meaty with lots of savory fruit and hints of new wood. Yet, it comes out structured and driven. Full-bodied with intense character and a flavorful finish.

93The Wine Advocate

...bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, sweet soil tones and warm spices. Full-bodied, muscular and tightly wound, with lively acids and prodigious reserves of fine, chalky tannins...

93-95Vinous / IWC

...bouquet of blueberry, cassis and iodine aromas... The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Citrus-fresh with orange peel and marmalade notes toward the persistent finish. Excellent.

90-93Burghound.com

...quite restrained and requires aggressive swirling to reveal the notably ripe aromas of warm earth, black pinot fruit, roasted plum and wood nuances. There is very good size, weight and focused power to the larger-scaled and dense flavors where the supporting tannins are also raspy on the youthfully austere finale that offers just a bit more persistence.

17Jancis Robinson

...spicy, dark-fruited nose of black cherry and nutmeg. The palate is sappy, layered and complex. The tannins are succulent, ripe and fine-grained, adding depth without bitterness. Peppery and toasty on the finish.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Vougeot, Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot is a walled vineyard that dominates the tiny commune of Vougeot in Burgundy’s Nuits-St.-Georges. The 124-acre Grand Cru vineyard includes a historic chateau that in 1945 was purchased by the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, an organization devoted to promoting the traditions of Burgundy and its wines. The impressive chateau is the organization’s headquarters. Clos de Vougeot was established as a vineyard by Cistercian monks in the 12th century, then sold off to private owners after the French Revolution. The vineyard is unusual for a Grand Cru in that it includes land that runs down to the main road. The soil is light limestone with sand. Principal landowners are Chateau de la Tour, with 13 acres; Meo-Camuzet, 7.5 acres; Rebourseau, 5.5 acres; Louis Jadot, 5.3 acres; and Leroy, 5 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
