RATINGS

94Wine Enthusiast

Ripe black-skinned fruit, dark culinary-spice, pipe tobacco, leather and menthol aromas... Round, juicy and savory, the plush palate delivers succulent black cherry, spiced blueberry and blackberry compote alongside star anise and ground pepper notes. Velvety tannins provide supple, seamless support.

92The Wine Advocate

...very fresh and elegant...presents prominent mineral notes, along with blue flower and wild berry fruits.

92Wine Spectator

... fruity, boasting black cherry, blackberry and violet flavors, but also reveals elements of earth, mineral and spice. Round and charming, fading gracefully on the long aftertaste.

92James Suckling

...deliciously spicy nose with black peppers, dried violets, hyacinth, citrus, blueberries and crushed stones. Full body, medium-chewy tannins, vibrant acidity and a succulent yet fine finish.

91Vinous / IWC

...fragrant and silky... Bright red cherry and floral notes are nicely pushed forward in this very pretty, nuanced entry-level offering from Le Macchiole.

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri

Bolgheri is a tiny village just inland from the western Tuscan coast with a storybook renaissance castle but no train station. To wine enthusiasts, however, Bolgheri DOC is perhaps Italy’s most exciting wine appellation. It is the cultural heart of the Maremma, the coastal stretch of Tuscany where some of the first Super Tuscans were produced commercially in the late 1960s. Various members of the legendary Antinori wine dynasty and other influential producers established estates in Bolgheri starting in the 1970s, creating such Super Tuscans as Guado Al Tasso and Ornellaia. Bolgheri was awarded DOC status in 1983. Red, white and dessert wines are made in this appellations, and many of the most renowned are the Super Tuscans made from blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese and other red varietals. The white wines are blends of Vermentino and Trebbiano. The reds are notable for being blends that have a distinctive Tuscan terroir.
