RATINGS

96Wine Enthusiast

...deep, lush waves of boysenberry paste alongside a savory tone of charred beef. Polished tannins frame the sip, where ample amounts of rich black plum and blackberry are enhanced by caramel, coffee bean and mocha flavors, with acidity holding tight into the finish.

94The Wine Advocate

...aromas of blackcurrants and blueberries, plus tones of iron, aniseed, mushrooms and dried roses. The medium-bodied palate is pure and spicy, with fresh lift, soft, grainy tannins and a long finish.

94Vinous / IWC

...sensual, open-knit and inviting... Raspberry jam, plum, white chocolate, spice, new leather and mocha...

94Jeb Dunnuck

...boasts a rocking core of blueberry and cassis fruit as well notes of tobacco leaf, violets, chocolate, and spice box. Full-bodied, it offers wonderful purity of fruit, ripe tannins, and a balanced, elegant style.

92James Suckling

Lots of ripe dark-fruit flavors with notes of dried herbs and cured meat. Some hazelnuts, too. Full-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and a warming mouth-feel that comes from alcohol. Long, dry finish with a touch of crushed-stone minerality.

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Ynez Valley, Happy Canyon

Santa Ynez Valley AVA is home to more wineries than any other area in Santa Barbara County. The appellation was established in 1983 and it includes a total of 76,800 acres, of which 1,500 acres are vineyards. Chardonnay is the dominant grape in this appellation, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. The appellation runs east and west with temperatures and microclimates changing significantly from warmer in the east to cool by the time the district gets close to the Pacific Ocean. In recent years Rhone-style wines have been successfully made here, and vineyards now are also planted to Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache, Mourvedre and Marsanne.
