RATINGS

97+ The Wine Advocate

...vivacious blackberries, crushed black cherries, warm black currants and red currant jelly scents plus exotic hints of cassia, cardamom, fenugreek and star anise with a waft of underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic energy and beautiful poise...bright, crunchy black and red fruit plus a firm, fine-grained texture, finishing long and spicy.

96Vinous / IWC

... Sweet red cherry, red plum, flowers and mint give the 2017 striking freshness to complement its decidedly mid-weight structure.... Spottswoode was one of the first estates in the valley to adopt a more moderate approach to farming and that really paid off in 2017, as a wine of this level in that year could have only resulted from impeccable farming. In a word: magnificent!

96James Suckling

A soft, velvety red with dark-berry, blackcurrant and plum aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, creamy and delicious. Pretty tension of fruit and tannins. Very refined.

96Wine Enthusiast

...beautiful, elegant and youthful wine, it offers seamless texture and integration, quiet hints of blueberry and black currant and a hint of cocoa powder. Gentle in nature and approach, it has a complex depth and more to say.

96Jeb Dunnuck

...has a Château Margaux-like complexity and elegance, with beautiful notes of crème de cassis, sandalwood, dried flowers, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil. Harvested all pre-fire, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and remarkable purity...

95Wine Spectator

...sleek and racy edge, with damson plum, bitter cherry and black currant fruit working together, revealing pinpoints of savory, sage and iron scattered throughout.

PRODUCER

Spottswoode

Spottswoode Vineyard & Winery was founded 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Jack Novak. The couple produced their first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982. Located on a historic 19th century estate which still includes picturesque Victorian buildings, Spottswoode owns 35 acres of vineyards planted primarily in Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. Spottswoode’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is the winery’s premier wine, and it earns accolades from reviewers and collectors. The winery is still owned and operated by the Novak family. About 5,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley are produced each year.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

St. Helena AVA is at the northern end of Napa Valley just north of Rutherford and south of Calistoga. It is a relatively warm climate thanks to the Mayacamas Mountains on its western edge, which protect it from Pacific Ocean fog. Out of the 9,000 acres in the appellation, some 1,500 are under vine. The principal grapes grown in St. Helena are the Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. St. Helena is considered prime wine producing territory, and it was one of the first important wine producing regions in northern California. The legendary Charles Krug founded his winery just north of the town of St. Helena in 1873, and today the appellation is home to many prestigious producers, including Abreu, Grace Family and Spottswoode.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
