Cuvée Guigone de Salins comes from the Premier Cru vineyards of Les Bressandes, Les Seurey and Champs Pimont. Nearly half of the cuvée is from the steep slopes of Les Bressandes, where the vines are 40 to 60 years old, some of the oldest in Beaune. The cuvée takes its name from Guigone de Salins, the wife of Nicolas Rolin, founder of the Hospices de Beaune charity hospital. After his death in 1461 Guigone de Salins took over management of the hospital, where she took care of the sick and elderly until her death at age 82. She devoted her life and much of her fortune to Hospices de Beaune, and the cuvée honors her memory. At the 2014 barrel tasting before the 2014 Hospices de Beaune Auction, Christie’s reviewer described the cuvée like this: “Of the Beaune’s (cuvées), this has one of the deepest purple colors. The aromas are currently subdued, but this is often the case with this wine, which regularly shows rich structure and powerful fruit, rather than youthful charms. It is beautifully balanced, with elegant tannins, fine acidity and impressive."
