2019 Fingers Crossed Happily Ever After White

RATINGS

99Jeb Dunnuck

...blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Roussanne, it offers a rich, gold hue as well as an utterly sensational bouquet of ripe stone fruits, honeysuckle, flower oil, tangerine, and hazelnuts. Reminding me slightly of a blockbuster Chardonnay from Mark Aubert, it’s full-bodied and has a deep, layered texture and a great finish. This is heavenly juice.

95Vinous / IWC

...blend of Chardonnay and Roussanne from Sanford & Benedict and Cumulus respectively. Bright and airy in the glass, the 2019 is all grace. Lemon confit, chamomile, mint and white flowers are all beautifully lifted. I have to say, the combination of fruit from the Sta. Rita Hills and Oak View yields a compelling, elegant white that is seriously impressive....

PRODUCER

Fingers Crossed

Fingers Crossed, (formerly "FÆTHM") is the project from Nikolas Krankl, son of celebrated winemaker and creator of Sine Qua Non, Manfred Krankl. Nikolas and wife Julia began production in 2017 and released their first allocation in the spring of 2020. Describing their style as “…unabashedly Californian; sun-kissed wines that are decadent, perfumed, opulent and regal,” their offerings take some inspiration from SQN, including two different Syrahs, one of which is sourced just feet from the vineyard where Manfred produced SQN’s first Syrah ‘Queen of Spades’ in 1994.

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Rita Hills

Santa Rita Hills AVA in northern Santa Barbara County was granted appellation status in 2001. Located between the towns of Lompoc and Buellton, it has a total area of 30,720 acres with 2,700 vineyard acres. The area is considered a cool climate for vineyards, so vineyards are most often planted with the cool-weather grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The hills in the western part of this appellation are directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, meaning that maritime winds and fog make the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA particularly cool. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard planted in 1971 was the first vineyard in the district and is still considered one of the best.

2019 Fingers Crossed 'Til Death Do Us Part Grenache

RATINGS

96-98Jeb Dunnuck

Full-bodied, rich, yet always elegant and focused Grenache that has beautiful darker berry fruits as well as notes of orange blossom, pepper, spice, and violets. The blend is 76% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, and 11% Syrah that saw 29% whole clusters. If you get a chance, you should buy it.

95The Wine Advocate

...beautifully perfumed with notions of redcurrant jelly, black raspberries, blackberries ad rose oil, followed by hints of cracked black pepper, fragrant earth, dried Provence herbs and lavender. Full-bodied, the taut, tightly wound red and black berry flavors deliver impressive energy and freshness with a soft, fine-grained texture and long, fragrant finish.

94-96Vinous / IWC

...bright, effusive wine. Floral and spice aromatics give the 2020 a striking upper register. Juicy red/purplish berry fruit, spice, rose petal and licorice all meld together in this gorgeous, inviting wine. Veins of supporting tannin lend a good deal of energy...

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Maria Hills

Santa Barbara County is not an AVA, but a region just south of San Luis Obispo that includes the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley appellations. Wine has been produced in the area since the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted vineyards. It wasn’t until the 1990s, however, that producers focused on growing premier grapes for fine wines. During the 1990s more than 10,000 acres of vineyards were planted, and today there are nearly 20,000 acres of vineyards. The region received a big bump in recognition and prestige when the popular film “Sideways” was shot there in 2004. Because the region is affected by maritime weather, it is relatively cool climate makes it ideal for Chardonnay. Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and an increasingly adventuresome number of varietals are also grown successfully in Santa Barbara County.

TYPE

Red Wine, Grenache

One of the most popular red varieties planted, it ripens late and prefers hot dry climates. It probably originated in Spain, where it is still widely grown. Grenache is best known for its use in Southern Rhone wines, including those of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

2019 Fingers Crossed Two Become One Syrah

RATINGS

97+ The Wine Advocate

...opens slowly to blackberry jam aromas with layers of graphite, tar, lavender, charcuterie and bouquet garni. The full-bodied palate's concentrated, floral fruits are addictive, and its weightless, silky texture brings you back to the glass again and again. It has a juicy backbone of acidity and a hauntingly long, layered finish, suggesting it will develop over many years in the cellar.

96-98Jeb Dunnuck

...94% Syrah and 3% each of Mourvèdre and Roussanne, mostly from Z Block at Bien Nacido, it was 75% destemmed and is aging in 70% new French oak. This full-bodied beauty offers a layered, complex, cool-climate bouquet of ripe black fruits, ground pepper, and candied violets. Rich and concentrated, with incredibly purity...

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
