RATINGS

95The Wine Advocate

...pleasantly multifaceted, with complex notes ranging from charred beef, black olive and asphalt to blackberries and cassis, all underscored by loam, vanilla and cedar. Full-bodied...hugely ripe but balanced, with supple tannins and enough acidity on the long, velvety finish to balance the ledger.

94Vinous / IWC

Powerful dark berry, incense, vanilla and floral aromas are complemented by deeper suggestions of woodsmoke and candied licorice. Sweet, broad and seamless in the mouth, offering concentrated blackberry, cherry liqueur, violet pastille and cola flavors that are given spine by a core of juicy acidity. Shows impressive tenacity on the spice-laced finish, which is shaped by youthfully gripping tannins.

92James Suckling

...aromas of cassis, blackberries and redder fruit, which are all nicely intertwined. The palate has a silky, soft and approachable tannin texture with deep and fresh flavors.

Glaetzer is one of Australia’s most admired wineries. It is located in Barossa Valley, in South Australia, and was established in the late 19th century when the Glaetzer family from Brandenburg, Germany, immigrated to the Barossa Valley and began growing grapes and making wine. Today the winery is known for its Shiraz and Shiraz blends. James Halliday, Australia’s most influential wine writer, has given Glaetzer five stars in his newest annual review of Australia’s wineries. Five stars his his highest rating. REGION

Australia, South Australia, Barossa Valley

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.
