RATINGS

95Wine Spectator

Fine purity, silkiness and harmony set the stage for aromas and flavors of flowers, cherry, toasty oak and spice. Features a minerally undercurrent, while the finish goes on for close to a minute.

92The Wine Advocate

...already extremely charming, bursting from the glass with a lavish bouquet of cassis, dried rose petals, coniferous forest floor and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with an elegantly textural attack, a nicely concentrated core of fruit and lively acids, concluding with a precise, vibrant finish.

92Vinous / IWC

...splendid red cherry and wild strawberry scents, though maybe it does not quite deliver the same delineation. The palate is well balanced and fleshy, with supple red berry fruit, quite candied in style. Blood orange notes surface toward the vibrant finish. Very fine.

91-92James Suckling

...lot of violet-fruit aromas with a poached-cherry and red-plum core and deep-set spice notes, as well as chalky elements. The theme continues to a chalky texture from the limestone bedrock with fine, compressed tannins and bright red cherries.

17Jancis Robinson

Quite sweetly fruited on the nose – raspberry and cherry liqueur. Finishes with fragrant clove and cinnamon spice. Smooth, rounded tannins. Very Volnay, and very enjoyable.

PRODUCER

Bouchard Pere et Fils

This Beaune-based domaine is one of the largest and most venerable in Burgundy. It was founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard as a textile sales and distribution company. But twenty years later Michel’s son Joseph acquired vineyards in Volnay in the famous Les Caillerets climat and started producing wine. Over the centuries the family continued to acquire exceptional vineyards throughout the Côte d’Or. For nine generations the Bouchard family ran the estate, creating notable wines, and ran their own negociant business. In 1986 the Bouchards built a new state-of-the-art facility and in 1995 they sold the estate to the French Champagne house Joseph Henriot. With more than 300 acres of vineyards in various parts of Burgundy, Bouchard Pere et Fils produces Grand Crus, Premiers Crus and other wines. It makes red and white Burgundies and is especially well-known for Grand Cru Chardonnays.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Volnay, Les Caillerets

Volnay is a small appellation with just 904 vineyard acres and a town of fewer than 500 residents. Nevertheless, to Burgundy enthusiasts, it's a jewel. Clive Coates calls Volnay “one of the most delightful wines and one of the most rewarding communes in the Côte d’Or.” Robert M. Parker Jr. described Volnay as “the queen of the Côte de Beaune.” Volnay has always been appealing. In the 13th and 14th centuries the powerful Dukes of Burgundy acquired land there and built chateaux. The medieval town sits on the hillside above the vineyards and the appellation is restricted to red wines made of Pinot Noir. Though there are no Grands Crus, there are 35 Premiers Crus. Some reviewers say the lighter soil of Volnay, compared with Pommard to the north, makes Volnay wines more delicate and elegant than wines from neighboring appellations. Robert M. Parker Jr. wrote that Volnay has a “high-quality level of winemaking…The top Volnays possess an immense, seductive fruitiness and lushness…”

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, 1er (Premier) Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
