RATINGS

96The Wine Advocate

...delivers wonderfully intense scents of blackberry pie, cassis and Morello cherries, plus suggestions of dark chocolate, fruitcake and Chinese five spice. The full-bodied palate is bursting with black fruits, supported by a solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and spicy.

94James Suckling

Plenty of currant and cherry aromas with flowers here. Vivid and full-bodied with polished, velvety tannins and a fresh finish. Shows tension and focus.

93Jeb Dunnuck

Showing solid notes of bay leaf, bouquet garni, and some sappy, medicinal herb nuances, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, good mid-palate depth, and outstanding length.

PRODUCER

Purlieu Wines

Purlieu Wines' name is a nod to the estate’s Coombsville AVA location at the edge of the Napa Valley. The operations team is made up of two of the region’s rising stars, winemaker Julien Fayard and vineyard manager Steve Matthiasson. Purlieu sources grapes from the famous To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, as well as the Martinez Vineyard in the Vaca Mountain foothills. Purlieu also leases a small vineyard in the Coombsville AVA. Purlieu makes Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinous has complimented the wines, noting that they are “made in Fayard’s signature style that seeks textural richness and intensity.”

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville

Coombsville AVA is one of Napa Valley’s newer appellations, having received its official designation only in 2011. Tucked just to the northeast of Los Carneros and a few minutes’ drive east of downtown Napa, the Coombsville appellation is relatively large at a total of 11,000 acres. The elevation varies from 100 to 1,000 feet, and the climate is moderated by marine breezes from the San Pablo Bay. The main grape varieties here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
