RATINGS

97The Wine Advocate

...enormously rich and generous red wine that offers a compelling sense of balance and integrity...delivers a seamless array of aromas with dark fruit, blackberry confit, baking spice and barbecue smoke that leave a lasting impression.

97James Suckling

So fresh and powerful with loads of blackberries and walnuts. Full, very rich and long. A great wine.

94Wine Spectator

A full-bodied red, with rich flavors of fig cake, dried apricot, smoky mineral and espresso, enlivened by bright, mouthwatering acidity and wrapped around a block of chewy tannins. Expressive hints of bergamot and dried lavender show on the lasting finish.

94Wine Enthusiast

Baked plum, baking spice, blue flower and pipe tobacco meld together with earthy aromas of new leather and a whiff of underbrush on this impressive wine. The firmly structured palate offers dried black cherry, blackberry jam, dark chocolate and star anise. Firm velvety tannins envelope the palate.

92+ Vinous / IWC

Reticent but pure aromas of red cherry, smoke, mocha and oak. The palate conveys huge density without heaviness, plus outstanding inner-mouth energy to the lightly saline, chocolaty flavors of raspberry, oaky spices and minerals.

92.3CellarTracker

17.5Jancis Robinson

Intensely dark and savoury... Complex nose and still has fresh rather than raisined fruit. Rich and spicy and that aroma of roasted potato skins. Rich, chewy and powerful and really smooth... Delicious and long and satisfying. Really rich in fruit. Deep and rounded and long.

PRODUCER

Masi

Masi is one of the best known producers in Italy. The 1,200-acre estate is outside of Verona, in the Veneto region. It was established by the Boscaini family in the 18th century and is today still owned and operated by the Boscainis, who have wine ventures elsewhere in Italy as well as in Argentina. Masi is known for its Amarones though it makes a wide range of wines including whites, roses and sparkling. Gambero Rosso has noted that Masi’s wines, “especially the more ambitious labels, are a marvelous union of tradition and modernity.”

REGION

Italy, Veneto, Amarone della Valpolicella

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, usually called simply Amarone, was awarded its prestigious DOCG appellation status in 2009. Though lush, high alcohol content red wines have been made in the Veneto since the ancient Greeks settled there, the popularity of Amarone over the last few decades has resulted in international demand for the wine. Amarone is typically made from 45% to 95% Corvina, blended with Rondinella and other indigenous grapes. The blend is essentially the same as for Valpolicella, but Amarone is made from dried grapes, which gives it a rich, viscous quality and an alcohol content between 14% and 20%. Though Amarone is a dry wine, there is a sweet version called Recioto della Valpolicella. The recioto style wines are included in the DOCG, and the word “ripasso” on label usually indicates the sweeter style.
