RATINGS

96James Suckling

...very complex, integrated array of red-plum, redcurrant and mulberry aromas with cedary nuances, as well as forest wood, fresh earth, graphite, pepper, leaves, shitake mushrooms and more...palate is finely layered with grainy, powerful tannin and gives an overall impression of focused power with deeply rich dark berries, plums, berries and mulberries. Seamlessly composed.

96Wine Enthusiast

...notes of black currant, cedar, olive brine, bay leaf and cigar box. Layers of texture and flavor flow over the tongue, knit together by a powdery, fine line of tannins... It's a classy wine that walks a tightrope of power and elegance.

95The Wine Advocate

...notes of cedar and vanilla joining blueberries and cassis...full-bodied, rich and velvety in the mouth, ending with a stupendously long and luxuriously plush finish.

92Wine Spectator

There's an elegance and juiciness to the bright red fruit flavors and notes of spiced plum at the core, with pretty details of matcha green tea, nutmeg and toasted herb. Cumin, black pepper and cedar accents linger on the finish, where the tannins firm up.

17.5+ Jancis Robinson

...graphite and rather savoury with a distinct cedar note, tobacco and damp earth with fresh spearmint. Firm and fine, powerful tannins backed up by pencil lead and damp earth, crushed blackberry notes... Ground coffee and tobacco on the finish.

REGION

Australia, Western Australia, Margaret River

Western Australia is the nation’s largest state by square miles. However, by population and wine production, it is small. Western Australia covers about a third of Australia but has only about 27,000 square miles of vineyards, which produce about 7% of the nation’s wine. Nevertheless, wine writers Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson have noted that “in quality terms (Western Australia) is very near the top, with a distinctive lightness of touch combined with ripeness of fruit – an unusual combination in Australia.” The region’s winemaking history started in the 1830s and was centered in Swan Valley, which remains an important winemaking region despite its extremely hot, dry weather. By the early 20th century, the Swan Valley was noted for its age-worthy Chenin Blanc, and white wine grapes remain a staple of Swan Valley vineyards. Other important sub regions are the Margaret River area, noted for its lush, maritime landscapes, and the Great Southern sub-appellations. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc are the major grapes grown.
