RATINGS

92Jeb Dunnuck

...fresh with mineral earth, fresh cherry, and red flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it offers notes of fresh soil, black berry, and a bit of meaty richness, as well as ripe tannins and a clean finish with a savory edge.

90The Wine Advocate

It has understated scents of cassis, balsamic, dried herbs, coffee and meaty tones. The palate is medium-bodied with restrained, mineral-driven flavors and a refreshing finish.

16.5+ Jancis Robinson

Fine, light pyrazine character – blackcurrant leaf and mint – alongside medium-weight, ripe blackberry fruit and black plum. Integrated, cedary oak spice. Fine, dusty tannin with a bit of grip and elevated acidity that carries through the finish.

PRODUCER

Hamel Family Wines

Hamel Family Wines was founded by Pamela and George Hamel, Jr in 2006. The couple bought a house in Kenwood in Sonoma Valley, primarily to escape summers in San Francisco. The house came with an acre of Cabernet Sauvignon vines, and it began their family wine odyssey. Shortly there after, their son, George Hamel, III enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity to come aboard as the managing director to grow a multi-generational family business. Hamel Family Wines produces high quality wines in limited quantities from grapes grown on their Sonoma Valley and Moon Mountain District estate vineyards. The vineyards are farmed with organic and biodynamic practices. Buy Hamel Family Wines online today!

REGION

United States, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Sonoma Valley AVA is Sonoma County’s original winegrowing district. Designated as an AVA in 1981, it includes 14,000 vineyard acres in a long, narrow valley that runs north-south. Rather romantically, the valley is also called The Valley of the Moon. The oldest winery in the AVA, and one of the oldest in California, is Buena Vista Winery, founded in 1857 by a Hungarian count who planted vineyards in Wisconsin before moving to California. Today there are nearly 60 wineries in the AVA producing a variety of wines, from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon and Gewurztraminer. The appellation is bordered by mountain ranges on the east and west, which partly account for Sonoma Valley’s unique terroir. The mountains protect it from the cooling weather of the Pacific Ocean and fruit ripens well.
