RATINGS

94The Wine Advocate

...full-bodied...offers a deep range of air-dried aromatic characteristics with prune, raisin, dark spice and exotic cedar wood or mesquite...shows great balance with a touch of freshness that cuts though the texture and sweet softness of the finish.

94Wine Enthusiast

Enticing scents of spiced plum, pipe tobacco, crushed mint, new leather and a whiff of smoke come to the forefront. The full-bodied, velvety palate boasts dried cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and a graphite note. Fine-grained tannins provide the firm but elegant framework while fresh acidity keeps it balanced.

93James Suckling

...crystal clear character of cherry and plum, fresh flowers and hints of lemons. Full body, super linear tannins and a long and focused finish. A wine with elegance and structure. Edgy.

92Wine Spectator

An elegant, medium- to full-bodied version, featuring refined tannins and a tarry underpinning to the flavors of strawberry preserves, fig cake and cured tobacco. Balanced, with a spiced, lingering finish.

REGION

Italy, Veneto, Amarone della Valpolicella

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG, usually called simply Amarone, was awarded its prestigious DOCG appellation status in 2009. Though lush, high alcohol content red wines have been made in the Veneto since the ancient Greeks settled there, the popularity of Amarone over the last few decades has resulted in international demand for the wine. Amarone is typically made from 45% to 95% Corvina, blended with Rondinella and other indigenous grapes. The blend is essentially the same as for Valpolicella, but Amarone is made from dried grapes, which gives it a rich, viscous quality and an alcohol content between 14% and 20%. Though Amarone is a dry wine, there is a sweet version called Recioto della Valpolicella. The recioto style wines are included in the DOCG, and the word “ripasso” on label usually indicates the sweeter style.
