Shows tremendous density and concentration, with loamy earth notes and plenty of herbal accents to the dried plum and berry flavors. Offers details of date nut bread, star anise and dark chocolate that add richness and complexity to the finish. Polished tannins are dense and toothsome, never getting in the way of the flavors.

Ripe, spice-accented blackberry, cherry, mocha and woodsmoke on the highly scented nose. Fleshy and expansive in the mouth, offering concentrated red and black fruit preserve flavors that show appealing sweetness and subtle cola and vanilla notes. Becomes more energetic with air and finishes on a sappy cassis note, with solid thrust, mounting tannins and impressive persistence.

Ripe red-plum, blackberry and spice aromas and flavors here, all very complete. The balance of this wine is a real highlight. The tannins are sleek and carry rich, dark berry and plum flavors long.

This bottling offers notes of plum, blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, cedar and tobacco, with a distinctive underbelly of green peppercorn spice. The palate is full-bodied but not heavy, with great depth of flavor, muscular tannins and silky fruit. It offers plenty of precision and charm.

John Duval

John Duval Wines was started by John Duval, who was winemaker at Penfolds for 29 years. Duval was at the helm of Penfolds winemaking team during the late 1980s and 1990s when Penfolds won numerous international awards for its outstanding Shiraz. He is also involved currently with winemaking ventures in Chile and Washington State. In 2003 he started his own label, focusing on Shiraz, Grenache, and red and white blends inspired by the wines of Rhone Valley. James Halliday has given the winery his highest rating of five stars and noted that Duval “is an internationally recognized winemaker.” The wines have earned ratings in the 90s.

There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.
