RATINGS

92Vinous / IWC

Ripe pear, delicate blossom honey and abundant spicy tobacco on the nose. Juicy and complex in the mouth, with ripe peach, pineapple, dark wet slate and peppery nuances. An exquisite play of acid is displayed in this harmonious, elegant wine, which already offers outstanding drinkability and food compatibility.

91The Wine Advocate

...displays an unusually rich, low-toned impression, featuring beet root, malt, mocha-coffee, and peach preserves.

90.9CellarTracker

90Wine Enthusiast

Intense, creamy aromas set the scene for an impressively rich wine that brings out plenty of stops. While the fruit is fresh, it is also dense, concentrated, a welter of white and yellow fruit flavors over acidity.

PRODUCER

Franz Hirtzberger

Weingut Franz Hirtzberger is in Austria’s Wachau valley. It was founded five generations ago by the Hirtzberger family and is today still run by a descendant of the founder also named Franz Hirtzberger. The estate makes Riesling, Veltliner, Pinot Blanc and other white wines. Robert M. Parker Jr. notes that the estate’s wines “possess cult status.”

TYPE

White Wine, Grüner Veltliner

This white grape is widely grown in Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia. As a wine, it is food friendly and has beaten top Chardonnays in blind tastings. It compares to a white Burgundy in richness and texture, and offers an exotic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc.
