RATINGS

97Vinous / IWC

...brilliantly defined bouquet with real mineralité and tension, showing none of the reduction or blowsiness of some of its noble peers. The saline palate is very well balanced, with a killer line of acidity and a finish that fans out gloriously.

95+ The Wine Advocate

...classy bouquet of buttered Meyer lemons, toasted nuts, dried white flowers and mandarin oil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly textural but tangy, with a deep, tight-knit core, excellent concentration and a long, pure finish.

94-96Burghound.com

Moderate wood sets off a notably ripe and ever-so-mildly exotic nose that includes notes of peach and pear liqueur along with an abundance of floral and spice wisps. This is also imposingly scaled with its full-bodied and overtly powerful mouth coating flavors that deliver almost painful intensity and power on the dramatically long finish...big but impeccably well-balanced effort... A 'wow' wine.

18Jancis Robinson

Very winning and rich on the nose with wonderful richness on the palate. Bright and rich not at all heavy.

PRODUCER

Comtes Lafon

Comtes Lafon’s white Burgundies are among the most admired in the world. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that the domaine’s wines are “one of the reference points for white Burgundy.” Owned by the Lafon family and now run by Dominique Lafon, the domaine owns 34 acres of vineyards planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Based in Meursault, the domaine’s wines are Meursault, Montrachet and Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu. Parker has written that “low yields, ripe fruit, and a non-interventionist winemaking process are the norm at Lafon. The deep, cold cellars allow for a slow elevage….” Annual production is fewer than 5,000 cases.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet, Le Montrachet

Le Montrachet is renowned as one of the world’s truly extraordinary Chardonnay vineyards. Along with its three neighboring vineyards, Chevalier-Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, Le Montrachet is a highly prestigious Grand Cru. Though Le Montrachet is usually associated with the Puligny-Montrachet appellation, almost half the famous vineyard lies in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation just to the south. Le Montrachet is a 20-acre vineyard located on a steep, southern and southeastern slope at 260 meters above sea level. The soil is limestone and clay mixed with pebbles. The drainage is excellent and it is considered an ideal vineyard site. Until the French Revolution the vineyard was owned by a single family. Today the largest landholders are Marquis de Laguiche (whose wines are vinifed and marketed by Joseph Drouhin) with 5 acres; Baron Thenard (wines sold by Roland Remoissenet et Fils) 4.5 acres; and Bouchard Pere et Fils, 2.2 acres.

TYPE

White Wine, Chardonnay, Grand Cru

This white variety originated in Burgundy, but is now grown around the world. Its flexibility to thrive in many regions translates to wide flavor profile in the market. Chardonnay is commonly used in making Champagne and sparkling wines.
