RATINGS

99Jeb Dunnuck

...blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Roussanne, it offers a rich, gold hue as well as an utterly sensational bouquet of ripe stone fruits, honeysuckle, flower oil, tangerine, and hazelnuts. Reminding me slightly of a blockbuster Chardonnay from Mark Aubert, it’s full-bodied and has a deep, layered texture and a great finish. This is heavenly juice.

...blend of Chardonnay and Roussanne from Sanford & Benedict and Cumulus respectively. Bright and airy in the glass, the 2019 is all grace. Lemon confit, chamomile, mint and white flowers are all beautifully lifted. I have to say, the combination of fruit from the Sta. Rita Hills and Oak View yields a compelling, elegant white that is seriously impressive....

PRODUCER

Fingers Crossed

Fingers Crossed, (formerly "FÆTHM") is the project from Nikolas Krankl, son of celebrated winemaker and creator of Sine Qua Non, Manfred Krankl. Nikolas and wife Julia began production in 2017 and released their first allocation in the spring of 2020. Describing their style as “…unabashedly Californian; sun-kissed wines that are decadent, perfumed, opulent and regal,” their offerings take some inspiration from SQN, including two different Syrahs, one of which is sourced just feet from the vineyard where Manfred produced SQN’s first Syrah ‘Queen of Spades’ in 1994.

REGION

United States, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Rita Hills

Santa Rita Hills AVA in northern Santa Barbara County was granted appellation status in 2001. Located between the towns of Lompoc and Buellton, it has a total area of 30,720 acres with 2,700 vineyard acres. The area is considered a cool climate for vineyards, so vineyards are most often planted with the cool-weather grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The hills in the western part of this appellation are directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, meaning that maritime winds and fog make the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA particularly cool. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard planted in 1971 was the first vineyard in the district and is still considered one of the best.
