30th Birthday and Wedding Anniversary Wines

The wine you give to friends or family for a 30th birthday or wedding anniversary should be pleasurable to drink, as well as symbolic. Some winemaking regions will have produced better wines than others. Below we go through the major winemaking regions across the globe to help you identify the best regions to focus on when procuring a wine gift for those celebrating 30 years.

BORDEAUX

Unless you're buying for a person or couple who actually got married in Bordeaux or for one who was born in the Bordeaux region in 1992, you should avoid considering these wines as a gift. The 1992 vintage was a far below average affair due primarily to significant rains in August as well as torrential rains right in the middle of harvest. The results were light and forgettable wines that have not improved with age.

BURGUNDY

The 1992 Burgundy fared a bit better than their Bordeaux cousins across the country. Though hardly a great vintage, the 1992 Red Burgundies were generally pleasant and quite drinkable. While a few properties made outstanding wines that would continue to yield pleasurable drinking today, most are well past their peak and would serve only as a memento or a symbol most worthy of display only. 

RHONE VALLEY

The 1992 vintage in the Rhone was not one for keeping. Though some good wines were produced, mildew and rot resulting from spring, August and September rains resulted in light and sometimes watery wines. Not the place to look for a selection of 1992 anniversary wines.

SPAIN

Spain produced very charming wines in 1992, but the vintage was not considered great. More importantly, those that would drink well today—Gran Reserva—were produced in very small amounts. So, if your 1992 Anniversary wine or birthday wine is required to be Spanish, seek out the small number of Gran Reserva that were produced.

PORTUGAL

A dry growing season with opportune periods of welcome rain produced an outstanding collection of ports from the 1992 vintage. Many of the vintage ports from 1992 should still be drinking wonderfully today and may even be bargains next to the more heralded 1994 vintage. If you are looking for a near sure bet for your 1992 anniversary wine or birthday wine, look to vintage port.

CALIFORNIA

California (particularly Napa Valley and Sonoma County) is probably your best source of a wide variety of wines for your 1992 Anniversary or birthday celebration. Overall, the growing season was favorable to producing ripe, complex and often nicely structured wines that will have the structure and richness to last 30 years or more.
