SEATTLE, WA, October 23, 2020 / -- WineBid, the largest and longest standing global
online auction for fine and vintage wine, announced its best Q3 in company
history.
For the three months ended September 30, 2020, WineBid recorded
revenue of over $8.6M, with three of the top ten weekly auctions in
history. Average weekly bidders and
buyers were up over 25% year on year, with average new bidders and buyers per
week up almost 50% per week.
Some of the exciting and rare lots sold in Q3 included two
2009 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Romanee Conti which each hammered at $13,500, as well as a 2016 Screaming Eagle 3 bottle lot in wood case which auctioned at $7,950. Some of the more unique items included an
1863 Taylor Fladgate Limited Edition Very Old Porto, won at $2,450, and a lovely 1971
Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon, going back to the early days of Napa, sold for $1,500. Large format 1.5L 1974 Heitz Martha's
Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was enjoyed for $3,700. Many case lots were also auctioned, including
a case of 2000 Château Leoville-Las-Cases for $3,600, and a 2000-2011 HarlanEstate The Maiden, 12-bottle Vertical for $2,995.
“Only on WineBid can wine collectors find such a broad range
of individual bottles and case lots at such incredible prices on a regular week
to week basis,” noted Russ Mann, CEO of WineBid. “Meanwhile,
the COVID pandemic drove more wine consumers online, as they were not able to
go to restaurants and bars, and preferred the convenience of shopping online
and home delivery. The ongoing French and European wine tariffs made pre-tariff
wines even more valuable and new vintages more expensive. These dynamics have brought a larger and
broader audience than ever to online wine auctions, with interest in all
varietals and price points.”
At the same time, given the terrible circumstances for many
in the wine and hospitality industry, WineBid attempted to share and give back
to others in the business. Earlier in
the year, WineBid hosted the Wine Country for Restaurants (WCF)- Restaurant
Workers Community Foundation (RWCF) auction and raised over $120,000 for restaurant
workers over the course of five auction weeks with new wines added weekly. WineBid
also created a trade support program to help restaurants and wineries auction
inventory quickly and raise much needed cash to survive through the pandemic,
social unrest and fires in Napa Valley.
“With all the devastating impact on the wine and hospitality industry,
WineBid feels fortunate to have navigated the environment where we could offer our
platform to help others.”
Other notable highlights included launching the WineBid Wines
of the Week program, which benefit customers looking to purchase and ship
wine immediately, by providing higher quantities of unique wines not typically
found on WineBid. And most recently, WineBid launched its upgraded wine storage and shipping functionality, enabling customers to better manage their wines in
storage, as well as schedule wines for pick up or delivery, down to the
individual bottle level.
