Mauvais Garcon

Mauvais Garcon Rouge is French for Bad Boy Red, and Jean-Luc Thunevin, the St.-Emilion garagiste behind the label, originally wanted to use the English language label when he brought the wine to the U.S. However a California wine producer already owned the name in English, and threatened legal action. So Thunevin, who has been called both the “bad boy” and the “black sheep” of St.-Emilion, changed the label to French and added a cartoon of a black sheep. Thunevin upset the traditional world of right-bank Bordeaux winemaking in the 1990s when he bought 1.5 acres and, with no prior winemaking experience, started producing Chateau Valandraud out of a garage. It became a cult favorite. Today Thunevin and his wife and daughter own about 20 properties in Bordeaux as well as his negociant business. Mauvais Garcon is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc sourced from Fronsac, Pomerol and Bordeaux appellations. The debut vintage was the 2005.
