Alghero DOC was established in 1995. It is in Northwestern Sardinia, extending from the seacoast inland to an area of high plains. There are nearly 2,000 acres of vineyards in the appellation, which produces 200,000 cases of wine annually. The principal white grapes are Vermentino, Torbato, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The principal red grapes are Cagnulari, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Along with red and white still wines, the AOC includes dessert wines, sparkling wines and rosé.
