Carmignano is a small DOCG west of Florence known for adventuresome Sangiovese based wines. The appellation has only about 750 vineyard acres and it is dominated by several large producers. Appellation regulations in Carmignano require that along with at least 50% Sangiovese, wines must include percent Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and/or Canaiolo Nero. The blends can result in wines exhibiting the most interesting characteristics of all the grapes included.
