RATINGS

94The Wine Advocate

White peaches, pears, minerals and oyster shells all make an appearance in this savory, delicate wine of impeccable class and pure breeding. This is a great example of Montee de Tonnerre.

... rich, dense and impressively well-detailed flavors that culminate in a mineral-inflected and driving finish. A wine of harmony and balance that should age well plus it offers so much Chablis character...

92+ Stephen Tanzer

Tactile and bracing, with penetrating lime and crushed stone flavors intensified by vibrant acidity. This powerful, piercing wine boasts grand cru intensity and structure and appears to be built for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle.

PRODUCER

Billaud-Simon

Domaine Billaud-Simon is a 55-acre estate in Chablis, Burgundy. The estate has been producing wine since the early 19th century, though much of it has always been sold as cuvee to negociants. Under its own label it makes several Grand Cru Chablis as well as numerous Premier Cru and village wines. All are Chablis.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Montee de Tonnerre

Montee de Tonnerre is a 15-acre Premier Cru parcel just east of the village of Chablis and just south of the Grand Crus. Montee de Tonnerre includes the important climats of Chapelot, Les Chapelots, Pied d’Aloup and Coted de Brechain. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that “in blind tastings, this microparcel is often judged to be a Grand Cru. It is regrettable that its reputation is not better known…” The soil is a mixture of limestone, clay and fossilized oyster shells.

TYPE

White Wine, Chardonnay, Chablis Premier Cru

This white variety originated in Burgundy, but is now grown around the world. Its flexibility to thrive in many regions translates to wide flavor profile in the market. Chardonnay is commonly used in making Champagne and sparkling wines.
