RATINGS

96Wine Spectator

Opens with a nose of black walnut liqueur, dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee, palo santo, salted caramel and nutmeg that swirls around a core of ripe, fleshy spiced plum, black cherry and cassis flavors. The tannins are plush and polished, lending an elegant air to this powerful wine. Tremendous finish.

95James Suckling

...very complex, spicy aromas with espresso and licorice, as well as violets, blueberry pastry and blackberries. The palate has a very vibrant feel with some smooth fruit flesh around a core of intense, long and muscular tannin. Ripe dark-plum and licorice flavors. Spicy wrap at the finish.

94The Wine Advocate

...intense aromas of vanilla, cedar and boysenberries...full-bodied, creamy-ripe wine, big and rich, yet it's held together by bright acids...

94Wine Enthusiast

...intensely concentrated with lifted earthy, umami aromas like charred beetroot and dried mint that sit alongside the plush plum and blueberry fruit and chocolaty oak...surprising lift of acidity on the palate that comes to the rescue. Powerful, talc-like tannins weave the plump fruit and herbs together.

18Jancis Robinson

Lifted, ripe raspberry, dusty earth tones, with an extra dimension of depth... Cinnamon, dried herb and subtle, meaty spice. Rich, dense raspberry palate fruit, velvet texture, with firm, very fine tannins. Salty, then a long, vanilla-cream finish. Top class.

REGION

Australia, South Australia, Clare Valley

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
