RATINGS

93Wine Spectator

A perfumed, elegant red, with intense cherry, strawberry and eastern spice aromas and flavors. Reveals a creamy texture midpalate that tempers the structure. Persists on the spice-filled finish.

93James Suckling

...black raspberries and delicate smoky notes leads into the rather sleek but concentrated and creamy palate that’s supported by generous, polished tannins. Lively acidity drives the spicy and mineral finish.

91John Gilman

...offers up a nicely ripe, but not overripe nose of baked red and black cherries, a bit of youthful Savigny fruitcake tones, grilled venison, bonfire, a fine base of volcanic soil tones and plenty of upper register spiciness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and meaty in personality, with a good core, fine soil signature and a long, suavely tannic and complex finish.

90-92The Wine Advocate

Aromas of sweet berries, peonies, spices and sassafras...medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping wine that's broad and velvety, with melting tannins and an ample core of succulent fruit.

89-91Vinous / IWC

...fresh and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp raspberry and blackberry opening. Leafy red fruit combines with a touch of graphite toward the finish. A nimble Savigny with a peppery finish.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-les-Beaune, Les Lavieres

Savigny-lès-Beaune is the third largest producing appellation in the Côte de Beaune and has 1,343 vineyard acres. Located three miles north of Beaune, the commune of Savigny-lès-Beaune is one of Burgundy’s largest communes with early 1,500 inhabitants. Some 97% of the vineyards are planted to Pinot Noir, with the remainder planted to Chardonnay. And though there are no Grands Crus, there are 22 Premiers Crus in whole or part. The appellation is divided into vineyards that are either on the hillsides to the north of the highway and river, or on the hillsides to the south. Many reviewers believe that the best vineyards are to the north of the highway, and they include Aux Serpentieres, Aux Vergelesses, and Les Lavieres, among others. The northern vineyards have some of the best southern exposure in Burgundy, which accounts for the quality of the wines from those vineyards. The wines of Savigny-lès-Beaune are considered lighter than many other Burgundy reds. However Robert M. Parker Jr. has noted that the “top wines are usually ready to drink young and are very fruity and stylish…”

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, 1er (Premier) Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
