RATINGS

98Wine Enthusiast

Aromas of woodland berry, new leather, blue flower and a baby powder shape the enticing nose on this fragrant red. Juicy and bright, the polished, delicious palate doles out crushed raspberry, cherry compote and baking spice alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced while a licorice note graces the finish.

98Jeb Dunnuck

...layered with black cherry, leather, sage, and forest floor. The palate is full-bodied and fruit-forward, with fresh fig, tomato leaf, warming amaro spice, and dark-mineral earth....generous with ripe tannin and fresh acidity and does not feel weighed down by the warmth of the vintage.

95The Wine Advocate

The bouquet shows mild fruit with some potting soil, leather, tar and licorice...characterized by a savory side as well with a pretty point of saltiness that you don't commonly find in its peers. This is a true beauty—the wine is elegant, shiny and glossy from the inside out.

95Wine Spectator

A beam of black cherry and black currant fruit is at the heart of this red. Supple and balanced, this stays long and complex on the finish, as earth, iron and sanguine notes emerge. A dense swath of tannins lines the finish.

95Vinous / IWC

...dusty black cherries backed by an almost-rustic mix of leather, crushed stone and animal musk. On the palate, silky textures meld into with woodland berry and earth tones, along with notes of tobacco, savory herbs and saline-minerals. Vibrant acids add energy and sweetness to the fruit, along with a mouthwatering quality...finish is long, structured, and firmly rooted in the earth.

95James Suckling

Wonderful aromas of blueberries, lavender, violet and sandalwood. Full-bodied, extremely balanced and refined with beautifully polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows tension and focus. Complexity, too. Lovely length to this.

17+ Jancis Robinson

Cherry fruit of great depth. Concentrated...generous fruit finish...

REGION

Italy, Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino is regarded as one of Italy’s best appellations. Located in south central Tuscany below Chianti, the wines of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG are made of a Sangiovese clone called “brunello,” which means “little dark one,” a reference to the brown tones in the skin of the grape. Unlike some Tuscan appellations that allow other grapes to be blended with Sangiovese, Brunello di Montalcino is entirely Sangiovese. Montalcino itself is a picturesque, hill-top town not especially well known for wine production until the mid-19th century, when a local vineyard owner isolated the brunello clone and planted it. Other growers followed suit. Nevertheless it wasn’t until 1970s that wine enthusiasts started paying attention to Brunello di Montalcino, which by then was becoming an outstanding wine. Today there are 120 estates in the DOCG, up from about 25 estates in 1975. Brunellos in general are bigger, darker, more tannic and more powerful wines than Chiantis or most other Sangioveses. By law they must be aged for four years, and two of those years must be in wooden barrels.
