RATINGS

95Vinous / IWC

Expansive cherry, cassis, potpourri, exotic spice and cracked pepper scents on the intensely perfumed nose; subtle licorice, tobacco and vanilla qualities add complexity. Deep, sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering intense, spice- and smoke-tinged red and dark berry compote, violet pastille and cola flavors...floral quality gains strength on the strikingly long finish, which leaves smoke and mineral notes behind.

95James Suckling

...very structured and intense Pintia with lots of blackberry, chocolate and cedar character. Full body.

94The Wine Advocate

...moderate acidity...creamy, soft texture, with plenty of concentration, ripeness and tannins...powerful and tannic...good balance and the tannins are fine-grained. This has reached a good balance between power and elegance.

PRODUCER

Bodegas Pintia

Bodegas Pintia is the latest project of the Alvarez family, a prominent family of Spanish business people and estate owners who also own and run Vega Sicilia. Bodegas Pintia is in Zamora in the province of Valladolid, in the Toro appellation. The first commercial vintage was the 2001 Pintia. The estate makes just one wine, which is a 100% Tinta de Toro.

REGION

Spain, Castilla-Leon, Toro

Toro is a relatively small appellation with a rapidly rising reputation. Located in the province of Zamora near the northeastern corner of Portugal, Toro has 13,000 vineyard acres with appellation status. Like most of the region it sits on a high plateau of sand, clay and lime where summers are hot and dry and winters are harsh. The main red grape here is the local clone of Tempranillo, called Tinta de Toro, and Garnacha. The white grapes Verdejo and Malvasia are also grown. Most of the reds are 100% Tinta de Toro. The devastating 19th century phylloxera crisis, which killed grapevines throughout Bordeaux, did not reach Toro, thanks, it is thought, to Toro’s sandy soil. Toro later exported some of its healthy vines to France. Toro also has vineyards of pre-phylloxera vines, meaning that some special cuvées from Toro are made from vines that are more than 150 years old. The Toro DO was created in 1987. The legendary Bodega Numanthia is in the Toro appellation.
