RATINGS

95Wine Spectator

Elegant and dense, with cherry, iron, stone and spice flavors fused to firm, dusty tannins. The fruit is locked up tight, revealing potential on the long, fruit- and spice-filled aftertaste.

93Vinous / IWC

The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit laced with orange rind and brown spices. It gains more complexity and nuance towards the finish with an attractive saline aftertaste.

92The Wine Advocate

On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and expressive, with fine tannins, tangy acids and a charming core of fruit.

91-93Burghound.com

...beguilingly delicious, intense and focused medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the mildly austere, beautifully complex and solidly persistent finish.

17.5Jancis Robinson

Just a slight hint of sweet oak and heady, floral aromas. Very fresh and lively with real lift. Verily a charmer!

PRODUCER

Armand Rousseau

Domaine Armand Rousseau is a 35-acre estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy. It was founded in the early 20th century by Armand Rousseau who inherited vineyards then added more vineyards through marriage. By the standards of the region, Domaine Rousseau was a pioneer in bottling its own wine. It was bottling under its own name in the 1920s and began exporting. Today the domaine is run by Armand’s son and grandson and exports nearly 80% of the 65,000 bottles a year produced. Grand Crus produced are Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Beze, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Mazy-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Clos de Roche. Several Premier Crus are also produced. Clive Coates calls the domaine’s wines “vigorous and very classy…Moreover, they are all quite distinctive, each an expression of its own terroir. This is superb winemaking…”

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits Villages, Gevrey-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is a 78-acre Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin that traditionally includes the acreage of nearby Mazoyeres-Chambertin. For nearly 200 years the growers of Mazoyeres have been legally allowed to sell their wines under the more famous name of Charmes-Chambertin, and virtually all of them do. Charmes-Chambertin is the largest of the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Crus, and it generally has an excellent reputation. The slope of the vineyard is gentle and the surface soil poor. But producers including Joseph Roty, Christian Serafin, Domaine Dujac, Faiveley and Joseph Drouhin are acclaimed for their Charmes Chambertin. Principal landholders are Camus, with 14.75 acres; Perrot-Minot, 4 acres; and Armand Rousseau, 3.5 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
