RATINGS

96James Suckling

Focused and tight with fantastic density and focus. Full-bodied and salivating. Firm and focused tannins. Yet, long and linear at the same time. 85% cabernet franc.

95The Wine Advocate

Crushed blackberries and black and red currants with touches of bay leaves, fertile loam and fungi plus a touch of tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy, it delivers a solid frame and crunchy fruit, finishing on a lifted note

95Jeb Dunnuck

S full-bodied notes of jammy blackberries, tobacco leaf, cassis, and spice as well as some classic Cabernet Franc forest floor and earth all developing with time in the glass. It’s balanced, beautifully textured, and elegant

94Wine Spectator

Solid core of currant, blackberry, tobacco and loam notes and savory flavors, all framed by a light-handed singed cedar hint. Focused, with grip and cut. Understated in style, but everything is there, with some seriously sneaky length.

94Vinous / IWC

Gorgeous. Dark, supple and inviting... Cedar, smoke, mocha and savory herbs abound in this powerful, savory Cabernet Franc-based blend from Andy Erickson and Annie Favia.

PRODUCER

Favia

Favia Erickson Winegrowers was started in 2003 by Annie Favia and Andy Erickson. The couple are both Napa Valley winemakers with formidable resumes. Favia worked for John Kongsgaard and David Abreu, among others, and Erickson has been a winemaker at Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and other wineries. The couple owns vineyards but also sources grapes from Amador County and Napa Valley. They make Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, as well as Viognier and Rhone-style blends. The wines are generally available only via Favia’s mailing list.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley

Napa Valley AVA is the most famous winemaking region in the United States and one of the most prestigious in the world. With nearly 43,000 acres of vineyards and more than 300 wineries, it is the heart of fine wine production in the United States. Winemaking started in Napa in 1838 when George C. Yount planted grapes and began producing wine commercially. Other winemaking pioneers followed in the late 19th century, including the founders of Charles Krug, Schramsberg, Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyards. An infestation of phylloxera, an insect that attacks vine roots, and the onset of Prohibition nearly wiped out the nascent Napa wine industry in the early 20th century. But by the late 1950s and early 1960s Robert Mondavi and other visionaries were producing quality wines easily distinguishable from the mass-produced jug wines made in California’s Central Valley. Napa Valley’s AVA was established in 1983, and today there are 16 sub-appellations within the Napa Valley AVA. Many grapes grow well in Napa’s Mediterranean climate, but the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay is also very successfully cultivated, and about 30% of the AVA’s acreage is planted to white grapes, with the majority of those grapes being Chardonnay,
