RATINGS

98Jeb Dunnuck

...aromas of cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with loads of garrigue, ground pepper, earth, and licorice. It’s full-bodied and powerful, while staying light, weightless, and flawlessly balanced on the palate.

97The Wine Advocate

Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and velvety...stunning aromas of crushed stones, tea roses, black cherries and licorice. A powerhouse, loaded with extract, it finishes long and intense, picking up hints of chocolate and star anise.

96Vinous / IWC

...red and blue fruit preserves, exotic spices, incense and floral oils, along with a vibrant mineral quality... Alluringly sweet, seamless and broad on the palate, offering densely packed yet lithe raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors that show remarkable clarity and back-end power. The mineral and floral components drive an extremely long, sweet finish that's given shape by smooth, well-knit tannins.

96Wine Enthusiast

Decadent and richly extracted...luscious blackberry and cherry flavors. It's unctuous and weighty on the palate, edged by hints of crushed minerals, rose petals and char.

94Wine Spectator

Bright and fresh, with a tasty core of raspberry and boysenberry coulis flavors lined with subtle anise and black tea notes. Shows a flash of apple wood on the finish, revealing latent depth and sneaky length.

93James Suckling

Aromas of ripe, red plums meet dried, meadow flowers, strawberries and pastry. The tannins are suave, ripe and long, carrying plenty of deep, red plums. This really tests the limits of ripeness at the finish.

17+ Jancis Robinson

Compressed nose with savoury black fruit with some bitter flashes on the finish. Heavy going! Sticky tannic grip and dense, powerful fruit on the finish.

REGION

France, Rhône Valley, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the appellation, is a large area of nearly 8,000 vineyard acres centered around the picturesque town of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Located in southeastern France just north of the Avignon hills, the name of the appellation means “new castle of the pope” and it is a reference to the 14th century, when the Popes of Avignon built summer homes in the Southern Rhone Valley. Today the appellation is one of the most renowned in France and its terroir is known for layers of small pebbles, called “galets.” The stones in the soil are thought to help store heat and keep the soil warm, which helps ripen the grapes. The stones also help keep the soil from drying out in hot summer months. In 1923 Châteauneuf-du-Pape was a leader in establishing the idea that AOC wines in France should be made only with specified grapes, and the appellation allowed 13 grape varieties to be used. Since then the rules have been slightly modified to include several more allowable grapes. Red and white wines are produced, though in practice about 97% of all Châteauneuf –du-Papes are reds made with a blend of Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Counoise, Mourvedre, Muscardine, Syrah and Vaccarese. The red wines of this appellation are prized for being big, rich, spicy and full-bodied. White wines of the appellation are made with Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picpoul and Picardin. Whites are floral, fruity and relatively full-bodied.
