RATINGS

92Wine Spectator

This is lush, bordering on viscous, exhibiting honey, apple tart and butterscotch flavors. Balanced in an oversized way, with plenty of flesh and a long, spicy aftertaste.

91Vinous / IWC

...wraps around the palate with nectarines, flowers, spices and mint. It shows the richness and viscosity of the vintage, but with brighter, more floral shades of fruit that avoid heaviness...possesses fine intensity and balance. A hint of sweet spices lingers on the finish.

88-90Stephen Tanzer

Cool, refreshing aromas of pineapple, lemon, flowers and mint, plus a whiff of fresh apricot. Candied yellow fruit flavors are complemented by a note of honey and nicely framed by firm acidity.

PRODUCER

Domaine Michel Niellon

Michel Niellon is a 15-acre domain in Chassagne-Montrachet, in Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune. It is owned and operated by Michel Niellon, who keeps two very small cellars, one underneath his house. Wine writers often comment on Niellon’s small, cramped cellars and limited vineyard acreage, but, in the words of Clive Coates “small is beautiful in this case.” Niellon makes Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet and Batard Montrachet, and several Premier Cru Chassange-Montrachets.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Chaumees

Les Chaumes is a 19-acre Premier Cru vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune. It is one of 51 Premier Crus in the appellation and it faces east. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that “Chassagne-Montrachet is a treasure trove for outstanding Premier Cru vineyards. In fact, certain Premiers Crus…often achieve Grand Cru status in quality if not in name.”

TYPE

White Wine, Chardonnay, 1er (Premier) Cru

This white variety originated in Burgundy, but is now grown around the world. Its flexibility to thrive in many regions translates to wide flavor profile in the market. Chardonnay is commonly used in making Champagne and sparkling wines.
