RATINGS

94The Wine Advocate

...pronounced baked plums, boysenberries and mulberries scents with nuances of mossy tree bark, fungi, fragrant earth and allspice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is densely laden with black fruit and earthy layers, finishing long and peppery.

94James Suckling

Black-cherry, tar and floral aromas follow through to a medium to full body, creamy tannins and a fresh finish. Hints of hazelnuts and walnuts. Delicious and wonderful.

93Vinous / IWC

Rich dark blue/purplish berry fruit grilled herbs, chocolate and menthol...striking layers of nuance and complexity.

93Jeb Dunnuck

...full-bodied, opulent style. Lots of black and blue fruits, tobacco, chocolate, and a touch of violets define the nose, and it has a big mid-palate, supple tannins, and loads of charm.

91Wine Spectator

Potent yet polished, with deep currant, black olive and sandalwood flavors that take on structure toward fine-grained tannins.

REGION

United States, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County

Sierra Foothills AVA is in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and it includes parts of eight counties. With total acreage of 2.6 million acres, and nearly 6,000 vineyard acres, it is one of the largest appellations in California. Wine grapes were planted in the foothills during the Gold Rush in the mid-19th century and the appellation was officially recognized in 1987. There are five sub-appellations within the Sierra Foothills region, and more than 100 wineries, most small and family-owned. Zinfandel is the most successful wine grape in this region, though Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are also planted.
