RATINGS

95Wine Spectator

Ink-colored and full-bodied, with ripe fruit aromas, velvety tannins and intense berry and spice flavors.

91Vinous / IWC

...the bouquet: melted dark chocolate intermingling with dark berry fruit, clove and tobacco... ...palate is medium-bodied with plenty of tarry blackberry and bilberry fruit, struck through with a crisp line of acidity that lends freshness. Whilst not as complex as other vintages, there is admirable balance and a prevailing sense of old school classicism. It offers hints of truffle and black pepper on the finish... (May 2018, N.M.)

17.5Jancis Robinson

...lashings of rather charming fruit on the palate. Very serious, non-tricksy wine. Lots of palate impact especially on the finish. Very clean finish. Dry end but wonderful pure fruit before then. Talk about classic...

Rasping tannin...Good flesh, fruit and flavour.

REGION

France, Bordeaux, St.-Estephe

Saint-Estèphe is in the northern Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde River. Although it has no First Growth estates, its five Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Growth châteaux are notable, and, in recent decades, have become favorites with reviewers and consumers. Some reviewers also note that the appellation is today making excellent Cru Bourgeois wines, which frequently offer good value. There are 3,404 acres of vineyards and a variety of soil types, from gravelly soil to soil with significant sand or clay. The two Second Growth Châteaux in St.-Estephe are Cos d’Estournel and Montrose. The Third Growth Calon-Ségur is widely admired. The principal grapes grown are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
