RATINGS

92Vinous / IWC

Powerful, spice-accented scents of ripe dark fruits, licorice, candied violet and smoky minerals, with a hint of coconut in the background. Juicy and supple on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, bitter cherry and mocha flavors that are sharpened by a spicy suggestion of cracked pepper. Becomes sweeter and more lively with air and finishes velvety and very long, with harmonious tannins adding shape and gentle grip.

91The Wine Advocate

It's a warm-climate, rich, plush Shiraz, with a velvety mouthfeel and lingering savory notes on the finish.

91James Suckling

A warm, early harvest has delivered a wine with more dried, baked blackberries and plums...palate is assuredly rich and round with blackberry and dark plum-pastry flavors, layered on silky, dense and rich, ripe tannins.

91Wine Enthusiast

Inky-hued, it oozes chocolate, anise, olives, dried violets and black pepper. The fruit aromas arrive later, in the form of cherries and blackberries. The palate is rich and textured, a finely wound line of granular tannins around plush berry fruit and a long finish.

90Wine Spectator

The cherry and plum flavors have good intensity and appealing traction from dense tannins and notes of black licorice and tobacco. The tannins firm up further on the appealingly chewy finish, where details of clay and dried olive emerge.

90Jeb Dunnuck

It’s a ripe, sexy beauty that gives up tons of blackberry and black cherry fruits intermixed with notions of spice box, licorice, and chocolate. It’s medium to full-bodied, has tons of fruit and texture, and is a pleasure bent beauty that stays balanced and incredibly drinkable.

REGION

Australia, South Australia

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
