RATINGS

95-97The Wine Advocate

...aromas of cherries, wild berries, peonies and exotic spices. Full-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's deep and complete, with a concentrated core of strikingly pure fruit, powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish.

93-95Vinous / IWC

...crystalline bouquet that articulates the limestone terroir with style. You can smell the vineyard in this wine, crushed rock percolating through the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant red fruit mixed with spice and sous-bois, quite powerful yet somehow strict, almost to the point of attenuation, towards the finish.

90Burghound.com

...aromas of black cherry liqueur that are laced with notes of the sauvage, earth and whiffs of spice, underbrush and the barest hint of volatile acidity. The caressing and impressively intense larger scaled yet refined flavors exude plenty of minerality on the firm, raspy, mouthcoating and mildly warm finale.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Gevrey-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin

Ruchottes-Chambertin is an 8.1-acre Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin. Located just north of Mazis-Chambertin, the soil is thin and rocky and the slope is steep. In fact the name Ruchottes comes from “rochers,” or rocks. The principal proprietors are Armand Rousseau, 2.5 acres; Mugneret-Gibourg, 1.6 acres; and Frederic Esmonin, 1.45 acres. Fewer than 1,000 cases of wine are produced annually from this vineyard.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
