RATINGS

99James Suckling

The aromas are perfect with black olives, blueberries, fresh mushrooms, rose petals and mint undertones, all following through to a full-bodied palate. Round yet tightly grained tannins and an incredibly persistent finish. Gorgeous.

98-100Robert M. Parker Jr.

... A candidate for perfection, the wine has notes of fruitcake, licorice, black truffle, forest floor, spring flowers, and black fruits that literally soar from the glass and continue across the palate with a cascade of earthly delights...magnificent, almost chillingly perfect wine...

98Jeb Dunnuck

...flamboyant, mineral-laced bouquet of black and blue fruits, forest floor, camphor, chocolate, and exotic flowers...great, great intensity, beautiful purity of fruit...savory, mineral-driven character...enough tannins...

97Vinous / IWC

... Plush fruit and silky tannins push the black plum and blackberry fruit forward. Deep and resonant on the palate...exudes class from start to finish... Hints of lavender and spice meld into the pliant, inviting finish.

96Wine Spectator

A big version, with broad-shouldered currant and fig paste notes, wrapped in tar and roasted mesquite accents. The finish rumbles through, revealing espresso cream and licorice root details. Offers a gorgeous mouthfeel and a creamy edge that drapes over the warm earth, tobacco and alder elements at the end.

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Howell Mountain AVA in Northeastern Napa Valley was the first of Napa Valley’s sub-appellations, earning its own designation in 1984, just a year after Napa Valley became an appellation. As the name suggests, the AVA is in one of the highest elevations in the area. Every vineyard in the appellation is at least 1,400 feet above sea level. Some vineyards are as high as 2,200 feet and because of their altitude most of the AVA’s vineyards receive more sun than vineyards at lower elevations, which are affected by fog from the Pacific Ocean and the San Pablo Bay. Howell Mountain was home to vineyards in the late 19th century, but winemaker Randy Dunn is considered the area’s most influential modern pioneer. Dunn moved to Howell Mountain in 1979, acquired property and began making exceptionally rich Cabernet Sauvignon. The AVA also grows Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. There are 600 vineyard acres within Howell Mountain AVA.
