RATINGS

96Vinous / IWC

Rich, deep and wonderfully expressive, the 2017 has so much offer... Inky dark, fruit, game, spice, mint, licorice and lavender all build in a wine of regal elegance and head spinning beauty.

96Wine Enthusiast

...great blackberry fruits...ripe, juicy character...succulent and delicious.

95The Wine Advocate

...bold notions of baked plums, crème de cassis and blueberry preserves plus wafts of pencil shavings, fragrant earth and cedar chest. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit preserves with compelling herbal sparks and a firm, grainy texture, finishing long and lively.

95Wine Spectator

Packed with ripe, lively plum, blackberry and black currant fruit, backed by melted black licorice and bramble accents throughout... Ends with an encore of warm plum reduction.

95James Suckling

...currants, blackberries and stones. Perfumed... Medium to full body. Very fine, polished tannins and a fresh, fruity finish.

94-96Jeb Dunnuck

Loads of black and blue fruits, violets, classy oak, and ample minerality...medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and backward on the palate...

REGION

France, Bordeaux, St.-Julien

Saint-Julien is the smallest of the four main Médoc appellations with 2,175 acres of vineyards. It is just south of Pauillac on the left bank of the Gironde, and although it has no First Growth châteaux, its 11 Classified Growth estates are widely admired. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that winemaking in Saint-Julien from all classifications “is consistently both distinctive and brilliant.” He adds it is Médoc’s “most underrated commune.” The best-known estates are Léoville Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton and Gruaud Larose, and most of those have riverside estates. The soil in this appellation is gravelly with clay. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape grown, and it is blended with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and sometimes small amounts of Petit Verdot.
