RATINGS

95Wine Enthusiast

Fresh black-raspberry aromas meet with pinches of thyme and sage on the nose... The fresh berry flavors mix with peppercorns, thyme and eucalyptus on the complex and intriguing palate, which finishes with a boost of acidity.

95Jeb Dunnuck

...forest floor, gamey herbs, salted meat, and assorted mulled red and black fruits notes as well as a richer, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured style on the palate...big, rich, seamless Pinot Noir that excels on its texture and balance.

94Wine Spectator

Rich and fruity, featuring mineral-inflected raspberry, cherry tart and dried currant flavors that are buoyant and lightly creamed. Hints of cocoa powder emerge on the long, well-spiced finish.

93Vinous / IWC

...exotic and beautifully layered in the glass. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, orange peel and a host of floral/savory overtones open up first...notable aromatic breadth...deep and yet also light on its feet, with superb resonance and a real sense of vibrancy.

92The Wine Advocate

...nose of dried lilac, blood orange, cranberries and rhubarb with spicy accents and an earthy undercurrent. The palate is light to medium-bodied and silky with bright, crunchy fruits and lifted acidity, finishing spicy.

REGION

United States, California, South Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Rita Hills

Santa Rita Hills AVA in northern Santa Barbara County was granted appellation status in 2001. Located between the towns of Lompoc and Buellton, it has a total area of 30,720 acres with 2,700 vineyard acres. The area is considered a cool climate for vineyards, so vineyards are most often planted with the cool-weather grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The hills in the western part of this appellation are directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, meaning that maritime winds and fog make the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA particularly cool. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard planted in 1971 was the first vineyard in the district and is still considered one of the best.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
