RATINGS

100Robert M. Parker Jr.

...This is one of the most extraordinarily elegant Grenaches Krankl has produced. It is an intellectual wine, yet it doesn’t wimp out by any means.... luxurious bouquet of raspberry jam, kirsch liqueur, lavender, licorice, and spice box.

100Jeb Dunnuck

...delivers an incredible drinking experience with awesome aromatics, full-bodied richness, and a lightness and purity on the palate that’s hard to come by. Gorgeous red and black fruits, licorice, and assorted spices all emerge from this beauty and it is seamless, elegant, and perfectly proportioned.

97Wine Spectator

There’s wonderful purity of flavor, with depth, density and focus. Expands on the palate, where the mix of blackberry, wild berry and huckleberry flavors fan out, shaded by spicy scents.

96Vinous / IWC

A wild bouquet exudes scents of candied red and dark berries, incense, smoked meat and black olive. Lush and palate-coating black raspberry and boysenberry flavors are lifted by zesty acidity and complemented by exotic floral pastille...

96James Suckling

This is very sleek and beautiful with blueberry and spices. Beautiful purity of strawberry fruit. Floral and gorgeous. Full yet reserved and refined with silky tannins and a pretty finish. Cookie and cocoa notes.

16Jancis Robinson

Lovely sweet red and dark plums plus a note of burnt rubber and smoky bacon. Little bit of pepper.

REGION

United States, California, South Coast, Santa Barbara County, Santa Rita Hills

Santa Rita Hills AVA in northern Santa Barbara County was granted appellation status in 2001. Located between the towns of Lompoc and Buellton, it has a total area of 30,720 acres with 2,700 vineyard acres. The area is considered a cool climate for vineyards, so vineyards are most often planted with the cool-weather grapes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The hills in the western part of this appellation are directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, meaning that maritime winds and fog make the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA particularly cool. The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard planted in 1971 was the first vineyard in the district and is still considered one of the best.

TYPE

Red Wine, Grenache

One of the most popular red varieties planted, it ripens late and prefers hot dry climates. It probably originated in Spain, where it is still widely grown. Grenache is best known for its use in Southern Rhone wines, including those of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
