RATINGS

92Wine Spectator

Aromas of blackberry and currant with just a hint of black licorice follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and subtle ripe fruit, giving licorice and mineral undertones. Complex and refined. Very well done.

92James Suckling

I really love the character of dark berries such as blueberries and currants...rose leaf... Full body with fine tannins and a savory, fruity, silky-textured finish. Very fine indeed.

92Wine Enthusiast

...dark, dry, brooding wine, which has flavors of blackberries and red plum skins, which is not at all dominated by wood. This is a classic wine, with Saint-Julien's elegance and 2003's power.

92John Gilman

The bouquet is already showing lovely, developed complexity in its more black fruity aromatic profile of dark berries, cassis, currant leaf, a bit of black cherry, woodsmoke and spicy oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and surprisingly offers up rather cool fruit tones in the mouth, with nice acids, fine focus and well-integrated, ripe tannins on the impressively long finish.

15.5Jancis Robinson

Smells a bit green and stalky. Herbaceous on the palate too, though quite refreshing...bit dry on the finish.

REGION

France, Bordeaux, St.-Julien

Saint-Julien is the smallest of the four main Médoc appellations with 2,175 acres of vineyards. It is just south of Pauillac on the left bank of the Gironde, and although it has no First Growth châteaux, its 11 Classified Growth estates are widely admired. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that winemaking in Saint-Julien from all classifications “is consistently both distinctive and brilliant.” He adds it is Médoc’s “most underrated commune.” The best-known estates are Léoville Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton and Gruaud Larose, and most of those have riverside estates. The soil in this appellation is gravelly with clay. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape grown, and it is blended with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and sometimes small amounts of Petit Verdot.
