RATINGS

99Jeb Dunnuck

...pure magic. Loaded with ripe blackcurrants, tobacco, damp earth, and bouquet garni-like nuances, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, opulent mouthfeel, perfect balance, building tannins, and an awesome finish.

98James Suckling

Blackberries and blueberries with hints of crushed stones, licorice and violets. Medium-to full-bodied, pure and really harmonized with lovely fruit. So subtle, yet intense. Touch of crushed stone and pumice.

97-100The Wine Advocate

A little swirling of the glass sets the nose soaring with notions of crème de cassis, blackberry pie and stewed plums, giving way to nuances of Chinese five spice, crushed rocks and iron ore with a touch of lavender. The full-bodied palate is super rich and concentrated, delivering decadent black fruit preserves and spicy layers, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. Wow—that's a lot of wine!

97Vinous / IWC

Silky, creamy and deep...possesses magnificent depth and tons of personality. Inky dark fruit, blood orange, spice, licorice and sweet oak build in the glass, buttressed by quite a bit of freshness and energy that add verve. In a word: superb.

94Wine Spectator

Dark and winey, with waves and waves of steeped plum, warmed fig and boysenberry reduction flavors rolling through. Offers licorice snap, violet and apple wood notes that add range through the finish...

REGION

United States, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Howell Mountain AVA in Northeastern Napa Valley was the first of Napa Valley’s sub-appellations, earning its own designation in 1984, just a year after Napa Valley became an appellation. As the name suggests, the AVA is in one of the highest elevations in the area. Every vineyard in the appellation is at least 1,400 feet above sea level. Some vineyards are as high as 2,200 feet and because of their altitude most of the AVA’s vineyards receive more sun than vineyards at lower elevations, which are affected by fog from the Pacific Ocean and the San Pablo Bay. Howell Mountain was home to vineyards in the late 19th century, but winemaker Randy Dunn is considered the area’s most influential modern pioneer. Dunn moved to Howell Mountain in 1979, acquired property and began making exceptionally rich Cabernet Sauvignon. The AVA also grows Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. There are 600 vineyard acres within Howell Mountain AVA.

TYPE

Red Wine, Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the most widely grown grape varieties, it can be found in nearly every wine growing region. A cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a hardy vine that produces a full-bodied wine with high tannins and great aging potential.
