RATINGS

95Wine Enthusiast

Exuberant blackberry and blueberry notes extend from nose to palate of this powerfully ripe, luscious wine. It's decadent and forward yet full of mineral tension and taut, firm-footed tannins.

95Jeb Dunnuck

...great bouquet of black raspberries, tapenade, crushed violets, and spring flowers... Full-bodied, incredibly elegant and seamless...

93The Wine Advocate

...black cherries, black olives and tar all mingling on the nose...full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a lush, lingering finish.

93Wine Spectator

A lovely beam of cassis and dark plum fruit streams through, laced with anise and graphite notes and driving into a sage brush–accented finish. Shows the ripe, focused, racy feel of the vintage.

93Vinous / IWC

Aromas of ripe red berries, cherry preserves, lavender and smoky minerals; a sexy Moroccan spice nuance builds in the glass. Juicy and seamless on the palate, where the lush raspberry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors show superb depth and energy. Clings impressively on the long, spice-tinged finish, which features velvety tannins and an echo of raspberry liqueur.

92James Suckling

Very complex and deeply flavored with quite sappy, stalk influence, accentuating garrigue and floral elements. Some stony aromas, too. The palate has a polished, plush and assertive core of plump, ripe, red fruit and a long, plush, pastry-like tannin texture.

17Jancis Robinson

Delicious red fruit aromas – redcurrant, red cherry and a lovely rose petal note too. Instant, satisfying complexity here. Very fine tannin, medium length, lovely chewy texture. Stands out for its purity and breadth of fruit.

REGION

France, Rhône Valley, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the appellation, is a large area of nearly 8,000 vineyard acres centered around the picturesque town of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Located in southeastern France just north of the Avignon hills, the name of the appellation means “new castle of the pope” and it is a reference to the 14th century, when the Popes of Avignon built summer homes in the Southern Rhone Valley. Today the appellation is one of the most renowned in France and its terroir is known for layers of small pebbles, called “galets.” The stones in the soil are thought to help store heat and keep the soil warm, which helps ripen the grapes. The stones also help keep the soil from drying out in hot summer months. In 1923 Châteauneuf-du-Pape was a leader in establishing the idea that AOC wines in France should be made only with specified grapes, and the appellation allowed 13 grape varieties to be used. Since then the rules have been slightly modified to include several more allowable grapes. Red and white wines are produced, though in practice about 97% of all Châteauneuf –du-Papes are reds made with a blend of Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Counoise, Mourvedre, Muscardine, Syrah and Vaccarese. The red wines of this appellation are prized for being big, rich, spicy and full-bodied. White wines of the appellation are made with Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picpoul and Picardin. Whites are floral, fruity and relatively full-bodied.
