RATINGS

93-95The Wine Advocate

The palate is very well balanced with tensile tannins and a keen thread of acidity: vibrant and shimmering in the mouth. With plenty of energy on the finish...

18.5Jancis Robinson

High toned, muscular and convincing on the nose. Lots of energy and masses of fruit Great dancing play on the palate.

91-93Vinous / IWC

Sweet red cherries, red currant, hard candy, flowers and mint are laced together in a soft, lighter Burgundy...

91-93Stephen Tanzer

Reduced, wild nose hints at iron and game. Concentrated, rich and taut, with sappy, savory dark fruit and saline flavors displaying excellent lift.

91-94Burghound.com

...sleek mouth feel to the attractively textured, delineated and stony big-bodied flavors that are also shaped by dense but fine tannins on the saline-inflected finish that possesses slightly better depth and length.

REGION

France, Burgundy, Côte d'Or, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Gevrey-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin

Mazis-Chambertin is a 22.4 acre Grand Cru vineyard near the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The name Mazis is sometimes spelled with a “y” or without the final “s.” The soil is shallow and somewhat rocky, and the wine made from this vineyard is considered excellent. The legendary Lalou Bize of Maison Leroy is one of the smaller landholders with about .6 of an acre. There are some 30 proprietors with parcels in Mazis-Chambertin. The largest are Hospices de Beaune, with 4.38 acres; Bernard Dugat-Py, with 3.05 acres; and Joseph Faiveley, with 3 acres.

TYPE

Red Wine, Pinot Noir, Grand Cru

This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
