RATINGS

94James Suckling

Pristine, attractive fruit with perfume and freshness. Dark-berry and plum notes...tannins are saturated in ripe dark berries and plums and deliver a superbly fresh, shimmering, dark-fruited finish.

93Jeb Dunnuck

...oodles of black raspberries, cassis, and floral hints, it’s a total charmer with its fine, supple tannins and great finish.

92The Wine Advocate

...aromas of cassis, earth, black plums, black cherries and mulberries with wafts of menthol, cigars and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is lively and earthy with firm, grainy tannins, finishing long and mineral-laced.

92Vinous / IWC

...dark, dense and quite powerful, with plush, silky tannins that wrap around a core of rich fruit. Black cherry, chocolate, menthol, leather and spice, espresso and cedar all add character.

91Wine Spectator

...cassis, cherry and blueberry fruit flavors, backed by a mouthwatering bramble note and flash of roasted apple wood.

16Jancis Robinson

Glamorous fruit and very polished. Punches above its weight. Sleek.

REGION

France, Bordeaux, St.-Julien

Saint-Julien is the smallest of the four main Médoc appellations with 2,175 acres of vineyards. It is just south of Pauillac on the left bank of the Gironde, and although it has no First Growth châteaux, its 11 Classified Growth estates are widely admired. Robert M. Parker Jr. has written that winemaking in Saint-Julien from all classifications “is consistently both distinctive and brilliant.” He adds it is Médoc’s “most underrated commune.” The best-known estates are Léoville Las Cases, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton and Gruaud Larose, and most of those have riverside estates. The soil in this appellation is gravelly with clay. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape grown, and it is blended with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and sometimes small amounts of Petit Verdot.
