RATINGS

95Wine Spectator

Powerful and concentrated, with dark cocoa and Szechuan peppercorn aromas that mingle with the core of fig paste, plum and black cherry flavors. Shows a freshness to the fruit, but plenty of details gain momentum on the finish. The velvety tannins never get in the way.

94James Suckling

A very silky and approachable edition with a fresh, leathery edge, ahead of mainly redder fruit, pastry, cedar, leaves and a dried eucalyptus-leaf note. The palate is long, silky and supple with a succulent array of redder fruit and blackberry notes. Super primary and elegant. This is a young pup, nicely proportioned...

94Wine Enthusiast

...refreshing little oak...rich and polished. The nose is a downright pretty mix of sun-ripened blueberries, mocha, violets, black olives and touches of fresh eucalyptus leaves and Middle Eastern spices. There's power on the palate but elegance too. Silky with an even-handed grip of savory fine tannins, the fruit is ripe and plush and set up for aging...

94+ Jeb Dunnuck

...rich, beautiful wine. Ripe black raspberries, incense, minty herbs, and liquid violet notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, layered, concentrated Shiraz that’s impeccably balanced...classic, focused, and structured.

93The Wine Advocate

Black olive and plum notes form the base...includes 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives a bit of lift and a leafy, floral note on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied, with a firm, structured feel and ample tannins...

17+ Jancis Robinson

Both intense and mellow on the nose. Those slightly medicinal tannins are well in retreat...Some spicy balsam notes then green, fresh finish... Definitely Penfolds and definitely persistent and satisfying...

REGION

Australia, South Australia

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
