RATINGS

94Vinous / IWC

A wine of tension, energy and opulence, the 2013 has all the signatures of the vintage in spades. Red cherry jam, smoke, licorice, spices and white pepper are some of the notes that meld into the super-expressive, delineated finish.

93-95Robert M. Parker Jr.

...gorgeously sweet tannins that involve a voluptuously textured, full-bodied, stunningly rich wine with loads of blue, black and red fruits. It has the full fruit spectrum, terrific aromatics and a real opulence and richness.

93Wine Spectator

Rich, powerful expression of black licorice, graphite, dark berry and cedary, toasty oak, this is well-proportioned and focused, with all the elements headed in the right direction.

But by the late 1950s and early 1960s Robert Mondavi and other visionaries were producing quality wines easily distinguishable from the mass-produced jug wines made in California’s Central Valley. Napa Valley’s AVA was established in 1983, and today there are 16 sub-appellations within the Napa Valley AVA. Many grapes grow well in Napa’s Mediterranean climate, but the region is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay is also very successfully cultivated, and about 30% of the AVA’s acreage is planted to white grapes, with the majority of those grapes being Chardonnay,
