RATINGS

96James Suckling

The fragrance and poise...are exciting...fine, complex spices and tar. Some toasty oak...there's a tarry, black-fruit element with some graphite. This has richness and balance. Super-concentrated blackberries and sweetly spiced plum-fruit flavors combine with fine tannins. Very dense, super fresh, muscular, lithe, sturdy and assertive...

95The Wine Advocate

...baked cherries, blackberry preserves and prunes with spice box and incense nuances. The palate is dense and rich with dried berries and fruit compote flavors accented with baking spices and framed by grainy tannins, finishing long and surprisingly gentle.

95Wine Enthusiast

...ample weight, richness and texture. Alluring notes of Christmas spices and plum pudding mark the nose, while the flavors continue the dark theme, picking up hints of cola and roasted meat before finishing somewhere between creamy and velvety, spicy and peppery.

93Vinous / IWC

...Heady scents of dark berry liqueur, singed plum and incense, with notes of vanilla and smoky minerals... Shows excellent clarity and lift to the palate-staining blueberry, cola and candied lavender flavors, with juicy acidity giving the wine spine. Deftly marries richness and vivacity and finishes sweet, broad and extremely long, with solid punch and fine-grained tannins.

91Wine Spectator

Focused and open-textured, this is brimming with blueberry, currant, licorice and smoke character, framed by fine, crisp tannins and finishing with persistence and expressiveness.

REGION

Australia, South Australia, Barossa Valley

South Australia is the nation’s most important wine region. South Australia is to Australia what California is to the U.S. About half of Australia’s wine comes from South Australia and many of the country’s most acclaimed producers are there. Wineries based in South Australia include Penfolds Grange, Torbreck, Amon Ra, Henschke and Jacob’s Creek. The prestigious Barossa Valley is located in South Australia, and is often compared to Napa Valley because it is gorgeous topography covered in grape vines. First farmed by 19th century German-speakers who immigrated from what is now Poland, the Barossa Valley is the crown jewel of the region. South Australia has widely varying climates, from very hot, dry areas to cooler, high altitude areas. There are more than 150,000 acres of vineyards in South Australia, with more being planted each month. Shiraz is king, though the region also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mourvedre, Chardonnay and Semillon.

TYPE

Red Wine, Syrah (Shiraz)

This grape is grown in milder climates and produces a medium-to full-bodied wine. It is also known as Shiraz, but should not be confused with Petit Sirah, which was developed by crossing Syrah with Peloursin.
